On the first day of school, we brainstorm what a good teacher and student does and looks like in terms of character. Students form these ideas individually with think time and are asked to share their thoughts with the person sitting next to them. Once discussion is shared, students group up and share share what they believe to be the most important classroom rule. Finally, the group dwindles a total of five rules down to two and share their two top rules to the class. Once all groups present, students vote on their top five. The class will reconvene with a discussion about involvement in creating classroom rules, etc. After school, I will tally up the rules and find the five top rules based on popular vote. These top five rules will be printed and framed in our current empty frames below the whiteboard.
The goal of this lesson is for students to identify and synthesize the whole community involvement in creating a positive classroom environment. I will post the results on August 14th.
